Observations about Mains-2016 GS Paper-1

Analysis Mains 2016

2013 to 2015 2016
Answer each question in max. 200 words and 12.5 marks Same. Now internal breakup also given. E.g. 3.5 + 9 mark. In Question no.12
In 2013- 2 out 3 culture Qs from South India.
  • Culture not easy per se but relatively less difficult than previous years, because in Vijaynagar and Buddhist art- atleast some points can be written from memory.
  • South Indian art reappears after 2013. And Vijayanagar asked in prelim as well as mains.
So far they used to ask kingdoms’ Architecture e.g. Gandhara, Chola. Now specific king asked – Krishnadeva Raya.
  • 2015: Freedom struggle Mostly analytical
  • 2013: mostly factual (foreign freedom fighters, role of women)
This year, freedom struggle portion is:

  • 1/3rd factual: women freedom fighters in Gandhian struggle.
  • 2/3rd analytical: Gandhi vs Subash; 185. Outcomes

First time 1857 revolt asked, since syllabus change. Thankfully nothing from medieval India, unlike 2014’s Panipat.

2013: women in freedom struggle
  • 2016: women during Gandhian era of freedom struggle.
Ideals of Gandhi vs Dr.Ambedkar (in social science) Gandhi vs Subash (in Freedom Struggle)
Post Independent India- nothing asked after 2013. Drought continues. (as such linguistic state question is part of Post-Independent history but the wording is such that I put it under Regionalism topic).
World History: easy questions on industrial revolution and role of Germany in WW.
  • Tough question on “WEST” Africans’ role in anti-colonial struggle.
  • Each year they’re asking one question less than previous year. So 2017- they ought to be zero question from world history!
2015: 25 marks questions on “women issues” under Social science.
  • Nothing.
  • But then again- asked about women empowerment in full length essay, as well as their role in freedom struggle
2015: Dalit empowerment asked
  • Tribal empowerment asked. But bit factual question since you’ve to enumerate the Constitutional provisions.
  • Last year– how/why tribal sex ratio better than others?
2013: regionalism to separate state demand asked
  • How linguistic states strengthen Indian unity?
  • How development disparity leads to regionalism?
2015: link between cultural diversity vs. national identity asked
  • Link between Globalization vs. cultural diversity asked!? Seems as if they’re rolling dice to set question paper!
2015: Two questions from poverty, population, globalization
  • “Remove poverty by removing deprivation”- bit GS2 like question asked. But relatively easier than narrating labour migration trend of 4 decades last year!
  • Impact of Globalization- asked in 2013, 2014 and now in 2016.
Nothing in physical geography- in 2015 Finally asked – 2 things related to physical geo’s subtopic “disaster”

  • Himalayan landslides.
  • Urban floods
  • 2013: why more landslides in Himalaya than in Western Ghat
  • 2015: J&K ecological carrying capacity declining due to tourism.
  • 2015: why Himalaya highly prone to landslides? And how to reduce it?
  • Answer can be assmebled by merely combining the points from previous two questions given on the left-side!
  • मतलब की एक ही चीज वापस पूछी जा रही है.
  • 2014: Africa resources; 2015: Arctic Oil
  • South China sea. But as such this “current / contemporary” topic is 2-3 mains old. So like in prelim-2016, they asked good number of questions that were 2 mains old (e.g. Mars orbitor), same happed here.
  • Although Indus-Water treaty- that is a current topic.
2015: why shortage of water?
  • In essay, the UPSC examiner was worried about capitalism and terminator-3: rise of machines. In GSM1, it seems he is having nightmares about water-shortage. THREE question asked related to this issue! 1) How to manage land and water resources? 2) micro-watershed 3) Indus water treaty.
2015: smart city and pollution asked
  • Smart city and urban floods asked. With Lord’s blessings both covered in my mains revision lecture series of 2015 and 2016.
  • Urban floods, I classify as current affairs question given Chennai Floods-2015. (In mains context- 1 year old topic भी करंट अफेर्स ही है.)
2015: nothing from industrial location Same.

Overall

  • Just like essay-2016 paper was continuation of 2015’s essay paper. The GSM1-2016 seems to be a continuation of 2013’s paper! (be it landslides, women freedom fighters)
  • While Geography had seen receding waters in the prelim-2016, it makes a “cloudburst” here with total 112.5 marks worth question (=45% of the GSM1 paper!) similar case for Laxmikanth (with tribal provision question)
  • All in all- less difficult paper than earlier. Because ‘secret Material‘ or expensive coaching’ is NOT required to attend any of the question. Observe:
Questions Coverage Price? How much covered in Mrunal.org
